2002 THISTLE LAKE ERIE FALL SERIES

Report by Skip Dieball

Below you’ll find the top three in each of the regattas that make up the Thistle Lake Erie Fall Series. All of these trophy winners used North Sails to power their Thistles.

Interesting note. The Hoover regatta featured the debut of George Fisher (yep, his 1st ever Thistle outing!). George, US Sailing Sportsman of the year and Midwest sailing legend, stepped into the Thistle and won the light air event convincingly. I was fortunate to be on the boat with him (and his granddaughter Martha) and was amazed how he adjusted to the boat so quickly.

Congratulations to Steve Lavender for winning the series and sailing consistently through all the events.

2002 OLD GOAT REGATTA

Report by Greg Griffin

Twenty nine Thistles from Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina made the trek to Lake Lanier Sailing Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia for the 40th annual Old Goat Regatta. The competitors were treated to shifty Easterly winds from 5-15 knots. Short first beats with windward-leeward courses put a premium on starts and kept the fleet tight. Since some of our starts weren’t spectacular we relied on our boat speed and teamwork to move through the fleet. Getting to the velocity was another big key and whether we were footing or pinching to a puff, our Fisher cut main and jib were up to the task. On the downwind legs, we used our North Superlite chute to sail low and fast in the puffs and reach up through the lulls. My team of Mark Reddaway and my wife Suzanne were flawless and consequently we gained boats at almost every mark rounding. We were fortunate to pull off the victory as my brother Scott and his team were also sailing very fast. North Sails were dominant taking the top three spots and 7 out of the top 10.

2002 THISTLE NATIONALS

Report by Skip Dieball

This year's Nationals event was held in Eugene, Oregon. The event was last held there in 1969, and many "experienced" Thistlers offered up tons of advise as many prepared for the event. In the end, nothing could have prepared my team for the conditions which ranged from shifty, pond type sailing to full-on straight line speed. It was a great test and the winners sure did show their consistency throughout the event.

My team of Ellen Hartwell (Univ. of Mich sailor) and Justin Corbett (Naples, FL and 2-time Thistle champ as crew) had moments of glory, but in the end found ourselves having trouble adjusting to the conditions. Instead of playing the middle, you needed to win a side and stay to the outside of the competition (especially if you had a tight lane off the start). Our speed was rarely an issue (we used the Fisher Main, Fisher Jib and Crosscut Spinnaker), and it sure was great sailing in such a competitive fleet.

Congratulations to North Customer Mike Ingham with crew John Baker and Joy Martin who worked hard to fend off defending champ Bruce King. It came down to the last race, and Ingham's team sure showed their stuff in the last race by winning to clinch the regatta.

Congratulations, too, to Chris Gedrose. He swept the President's division by winning all the racings in impressive fashion.

North customers made up over 88% of the 74 boat fleet. Our mix of Fisher designs, Proctor designs and Northwest designs sure prove that we have the designs that best fit your style of sailing. With 7 out of the top 10 and 33 out of the top 37, more and more Thistlers are sticking with North. Our fast sails and friendly service are the keys to successful sailboat racing.

Congratulations to all of our customers and friends. The 2002 Nationals was a great experience and the organizers did a great job of making all of us out-of-towners feel at home.

2002 ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPS

A Clear North Sweep - 1,2,3,4,5!

Report by Greg Fisher

June 22-23, 2002 - This past weekend the Thistle Atlantic Coats took place at Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey - 49 boats. It was an exceptionally well attended regatta considering the temperature and location. Pretty lake, but not exceptionally huge. I did a clinic on Friday and was amazed we had nearly 22 boats out on the water! I gave a short talk before we went on the water followed by some drills, some racing and a lot of video. After the dinner and some beers I showed the video to a group of maybe 60-70. There wasn't a whole lot of wind but we still were able to watch and learn some technique from some of the best, including Mike Ingham, who helped me critique a bit. The results are below. A sweep, as usual for North!

Final results:

1.Mike Ingham, John Baker & Joy Martin - 21pts - Fisher main, Proctor jib, RC4 spinnaker
2.Brent Barbehenn, Jeff Jones & Gavin Glenn-Har - 30pts - Fisher Main, Fisher jib, Superlite spinnaker
3.Chris Murphy, Scott Lennox & Jessica Kitchin - 35pts - Fisher Main, Fisher jib, Superlite spinnaker
4. Lloyd Kitchin, III, Greg Kitchin & Doug Kitchin - 37pts - Proctor main, Proctor jib, Superlite spinnaker
5.Jack Bauer, Fred Bauer & Cherie Bauer - 38pts - Proctor Main, Proctor jib, RC4 spinnaker

2002 GREAT LAKES CHAMPS

North Domination: 43 boats, 42 used North!

Report by Skip Dieball

June 10, 2002 - This past weekend, Seneca Yacht Club hosted the Thistle Great Lakes. The conditions on Saturday were ideal with winds 10-20 and four races completed. Sunday's only race was in light to drifting breezes.

The real story for North One-Design.....of the 43 boats, 42 had North upwind sails and 40 had North Downwind.

Results are below:

1) Eric Gesner (Fisher Main, Proctor Jib, Crosscut Spin)
2) Bruce King
3) Brad Thompson (Proctor Main, Proctor Jib, BiRadial Spin)
4) Doug Kaukeinen (Fisher Main, Fisher Jib, BiRadial Spin)
5) Chris Pollak (Proctor Main, Proctor Jib, Crosscut Spin)

2002 8-BALL REGATTA

North Customer wins with amazing consistency!

Indianapolis, IN, 37 boats
Report by Skip Dieball

Blair Dryden of Fishers, Indiana won the 8-ball this past weekend in Indy. Blair with crew Barrett Rhodes and Amy Kirsch (first time racing!) came out of the blocks quickly with a 4,1,1. With short, college-style races, Dryden and team avoided the big score and won the event over 2001 National Champ Bruce King. When asked what the key was, Blair said, "staying out of trouble and having faith in our boatspeed".....Blair was the only competitor not to score a finish out of the top 10 all weekend.

Eric Bradley with crew Stevie Frazier and Karl Bradley took home the trophy for top Jr. Team. They sailed their newly acquired boat to 13th and two finishes in the top 10. Thistles are strong on the Midwest Junior Circuit and these guys got off to a quick start with an impressive showing in Indy.

2002 THISTLE MIDWINTERS EAST

Report by Skip Dieball

The Thistle Midwinters East was held in March at St. Pete Yacht Club. A slightly lower turnout of 52 boats were greeted to extremely high winds and cold temps. In fact, practice racing and the first day were cancelled due to "wind chill".

In the end, six races were completed and although our sails didn't win this one, 7 out of the top 10 used North. Here's some results and stats:

1) Bill Draheim,
2) Eric Gesner
3) Bruce King
4) Skip Dieball
5) Bob McNitt
6) Dave Hansen
7) Tom Hubble
8) Jack Finefrock
9) Chris Klotz
10) Chris Laborde

Out of the 52 boats, 45 had North Sails!

Greg Fisher once again did a great job with the Coach-TCA. He really works the group nice by not only coaching, but also getting the great sailors/customers involved in the discussions. For more information on North Racing Clinics, click here.

2002 THISTLE MIDWINTERS WEST

Mission Bay Yacht Club - San Diego

Report by Greg Fisher

The Thistle Midwinters West were sailed January 17-20 on Mission Bay in San Diego. 35 boats sailed in some of the best conditions San Diego has to offer. With breezes of 5-15 the entire weekend, everyone got a little of everything. George Samuels, the regatta chair and the Mission Bay fleet put on a superb show and provided great hospitality. Thanks to all!

This regatta proved to be one of the more successful showings for North One Design in major Thistle Class championships in over a year! North Sails were on the top five boats in the Championship fleet and the top two in the Presidents division!

I, with my team of Jeff Eiber and Jo Ann Jones were fortunate to best Mike Gillum from Roseville, Ca. It was a tight series throughout with only one point between us at the series end. Terry Lettenmaier from Seattle was third.
Terry actually provided some of the best news of the regatta for North. Having won this regatta in 1999 and 2000 with Norths, he switched to Quantums for 2001 where he finished 7th. This year he sailed Quantums for the first two days. The last day Terry switched back to his trusty Norths and won the day with a 1,2!

Kris Vogelsong of San Jose, Ca. won the President's division.

Preceding the regatta, the Larry Klein Memorial match race regatta was sailed in Mission Bay. After three fleet races and a ladder series match race, One Design's Chris Snow sailed our boat and devastated the fleet!...his first time in a Thistle! I videoed the Larry Klein racing which we showed in a couple seminars later in the regatta...but I was glad I was watching and not trying to compete against Chris- he was hot!! Another great result for North!

Actually it was encouraging that all three of our sail designs performed well at this regatta.
We won using the Fisher Designs (of course!), Gillum was second with the Proctor Designs and Lettenmaier switched to the Northwest Designs for the last day.

It truly is a great situation for our customers where we have a "style" of sail that fits their "style" of sailing. One design likes centering the traveller and vang sheeting, for example. While another likes dropping the traveller and sheeting the main hard. The third likes easing the sheet with the vang on hard. If you're not comfy with one model try another!

2001 THISTLE NATIONALS
Report by Greg Fisher

The Thistle Nationals were sailed in Traverse City, Michigan. A near record 92 boats competed and sailed in nearly every condition Lake Michigan could offer. As usual North Sails had by far the largest percentage of sails there. Bruce King of Indianapolis sailed a great regatta and won the event over last year's winner, Mike Ingham by just a few points. Unfortunately Mike had a 16th, I think, in the fourth race but otherwise beat King in every race. Ingham sailed the North Proctor jib, the North Fisher main and the RC4 spinnaker. 8 out of the top ten sailed North sails. North finished 2,3,4,5!!
