Hull Color: Cornelius Shields Green
Rob purchased the LLLAMA from Peter Gerrard a few years back and has been enjoying his acquisition ever since. It took me a while to realize that LLLAMA was spelt with 3 L’s. When I asked Rob why that was the case, he answered, “because it came that way.” The mystery continues, and I will continue, to dig, until I get to the bottom of it. Rob keeps the boat south of the bridge, off the CYC, for Spring and Fall racing, and in front of his house, north of the bridge, for the summer racing. This off-season Rob had the bottom resprayed and topsides buffed out by C.T. Oleander. The boat looks great.
The Players:
Rob Salk: Rob drives the boat when he’s in town and available. Rob has owned a number of different race boats over the years: 1D-35, NM 47, J-105, J109, etc. Rob uses the Shields as practice tiller time and appreciates the one-design style of racing. Rob is a doctor by profession but likes to live vicariously through his children and their many impressive sailing accomplishments.
Nate Merrill: Nate Merrill hails form Hingham and Nantucket Massachusetts. Nate works for North Sails Direct in the North Sails Portsmouth Loft. Nate trims the headsail and contributes to much of the tactical discussion. Nate sailed at Tabor Academy in high school and played an integral part in the development of the Bates University Sailing Team.
Pete Largess: Pete is a Jamestown native. He spends his summers sailing on Rob Salk’s boats and climbing trees. His father, Matt Largess, started Largess Forestry and Pete seems to be following in his footsteps. Pete is LLLAMA’s spinnaker trimmer and excited upwind observer.
Mike Bernstien: is a hero. He drives 100 miles every Wednesday to compete in Fleet 9 Shields Racing. Mike works for The Sports Authority out by Framingham in the summer, and for the same company out in Vail during the winter. Mike is a graduate of the PCD School and Boston University. He does bow on the LLLAMA.
Charlie Enright: Charlie works for North Sails One Design along side Chuck Allen and Will Welles. He spent last summer sailing with a number of different boats but this summer he has settled down with the LLLAMA. Charlie trims the main and keeps his head out of the boat.
