Mast Base Holders:

You do not have to hold the mast base with bolts and armor; these are just simple awls holding it in place. Once you start to wind the rig up-she will not be moving. This makes for quicker adjustments if need be.

  Cheat Sheets:

These next photos are what we call “Cheat Sheets” or quick reminders to the team to help with changing gears for different breeze conditions. They are fairly self explanatory, if there are some items you have please feel free to let me know and we can add them. These are located on the inside part of the transom. We have put them in a PDF File for you to download and laminate if you wish.

Rig Number Cheat Sheets/Loos Gauge:

These are our rig number “cheat sheets”, complete with the numbers from our North Sails Tuning Guide at your quick disposal. Notice the “tighten arrow”-how many times have you asked “am I tightening or loosening?” We have put them in a PDF File for you to download and laminate if you wish.

Notice twing location and angle in this photo. Photo of new Loos Gauge.

Genoa Track Referencing:

This one sounds like a gimmee, but at The Easter Regatta, I noticed a bunch of boats without numbers on the track. You got to have a quick reference for your trimmer-leads forward in light/flat water and leads aft when it pipes up, especially with waves.

Driver Foot Rest:

No need to spend all that money installing cute carbon footrests, try The Home Depot Special (see photo). Make sure to cover with garden hose for gripping. Also, install a footrest on each side of the bar (fore and aft).

Genoa Cunningham Control:

Easy access for the bow person is key; we found this location at the stanchion to be best, low profile, no drilling into the deck and out of footing while gibing.

Cassette Tape-Got to Have It:

We found having a cassette tape aboard is handy, especially in the light stuff. They are on all shrouds helping the driver recognize breeze direction upwind and downwind with the kite up. We add genoa telltales just below the window (see attached), they seem to really help show the sensitivity when installed in these locations.

Coat Hanger/Cassette Tape Windex:

Great for light air venues, like lake sailing. It seems to be much more sensitive to that under 10 knot breeze range than a windex. You’ll see it in the photo along with our North Sails Newport Main set up in about 6 knots of wind. Also, notice the genoa leech telltale through the spreader window-perfectly streaming.

Wind Shot Etiquette:

You need to be taking wind shots to help compare to how the R/C is setting up and oscillating breeze. In the photo attached you’ll notice Ernie (our bow person) holding the genoa forward of the mast. This accomplishes two things: It saves the clew and leech from wear by beating on the mast and it gives your team the best/clearest wind shot possible. Help save your genoa by pulling it forward during those wind shots, it becomes imperative as the breeze increases.

Timing the Start:

We find the Ronstan Timer to be the best for “quick reads”-notice the sizing on Mike Ingham’s wrist. It is a good idea to have the driver, middle person and bow person/sighter to all have running time.

Cover Up When Traveling:

You spend all that time working on your keel and rudder-buy some covers to keep them in the best possible shape when traveling from event to event. Photos show our North Sails J/24 Keel and Rudder Covers.

North Covers can can be ordered at www.onedesign.com/covers or by simply calling Chuck Allen at 1-401-683-7997.
